We were resolutely opposed to Australia's participation with the US in the illegal invasion of Iraq. The Howard government did not allow a full parliamentary debate but rushed the war bill through parliament despite the huge marches through Australian cities which sent a clear message of disapproval to the government. I formed GROVIL (Grassroots Resistance Opposing Violations of International Law) in order to effect Citizen's Arrests on Howard government politicians. Rewards were offered to those who attempted arrests. Several ministers were "arrested" including John Howard and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer. ... less

It is extremely important that support be given to the UN,and its success stories-Korea,East Timor be given full credit, not its failures eg in the Balkans where Dutch UN forces weakly failed to prevent a genocide(and the Dutch government subsequently resigned). The problems of constructing a regionally acceptable UN peacekeeping force,as in Darfur, and ensuring that it has sufficient helicopters, armoured cars and other equipment to perform its role is critical. The reorganizing, strengthening and marketing of the UN is now one
of the vital tasks of the 21st Century, along with human rights, climate change, health, education and other issues. With regard to the criminality of Bush,Cheney, and lackeys,Blair,Howard, they should prosecuted no less than,Goering and Ribbentrop et al. and the Pol Pot Regime.Future military actions, should be strictly regulated by UN statutes-for example action should only be carried out in of defence of countries whose integrity has been violated(eg S.Korea).National parliaments would need a 2/3 rds majority also. ... less

"Ignorance of the law is no excuse" - our Government Ministers MUST be held accountable for criminal actions in the same way as any other citizen. The Invasion of Iraq was a Great War war crime, along with many associated smaller war crimes. Only by acting can we discourage future leaders form action with impunity, otherwise we give our consent and thereby are also complicit in these crimes. ... less

In many areas John Howard proved himself utterly uncaring about human life or wellbeing. His policies towards refugees, welfare recipients and Aborigines are examples. But nowhere has this callous cruelty, (that he seemed blissfully unaware of) been of such huge proportions as his intense and unwavering support for the mass slaughter and disaster that is today's Iraq. I have read that he egged Bush on when Bush was having a rare attack of doubt caused by conscience. (Reference: the Woodward book on Bush). ... less

I can do no better than second Professor Francis A Boyle's assessment in his book Destroying World Order (2004): "In international legal terms, the Bush Jr administration should be viewed as constituting an ongoing criminal conspiracy under international criminal law in violation of the Nuremberg Charter, the Nuremberg Judgment, and the Nuremberg Principles, due to its formulation and undertaking of war policies which are legally akin to those perpetrated by the Nazi regime in pre-World War II Germany." Those who have aided and abetted this criminal conspiracy should be held accountable for its appalling results. ... less

The people of Australian were quite clear in their opposition to the invasion of Iraq. They were well aware it was about oil, and had nothing to do with non-existent weapons of mass destruction, or the toppling of a man whom the US was happy to call 'friend' in former days. Poll after poll showed that more than 80% of Australians were against it but the Howard government, in a display of contempt for the democratic process, dragged our name and international reputation through the mud by joining the invasion of a sovereign nation that did not threaten us, and supporting the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure and the massacre of tens of thousands of its citizens.

Such outrages cannot be ignored. Messrs Howard, Hill and Downer must be made to account for their actions in the international court of law. ... less
